Face to face with a Somali Pirate Interview

This video of a interview with a Somali Pirate is a rare glimpse into the world of modern day Pirate behavior in the Indian Ocean.

If sailing the high seas, Pirates are a real threat and it is seldom we hear from incarcerated Pirates and what fueled the epidemic at sea in the first place.

As reported, Somali Pirates initially were motivated to defend there fishery resources, then matters began to take on a terrorist tone for financial gain. Because local legal systems failed to prosecute these hostile acts at sea in a court of law, there remains little motivation to curve these activities in Somali.

Face to face with a Somali pirate

BBC Reporting 6 May 2012:  Very few of the Somali-based pirates who plague the Indian Ocean have been brought to justice, partly as a result of the lack of government in Somalia. But several are being held at Hargeisa prison in Somaliland - an internationally unrecognised state which broke away from Somalia in 1991.

One Somali pirate serving six years in prison told the BBC's Simon Reeve that he thought the piracy was justified even though it has become a multi-million dollar criminal industry and there have been cases of hostages and ship's crew being killed.

Cahoots Duo Challenge

Post from the TRUNK BLOG

Obstacle races and mud runs like the Warrior Dash and the Tough Mudder are becoming increasingly popular. And for good reason: they’re challenging and a ton a fun.

AoM reader Devon Anderson is starting a new obstacle race with a great twist. Anderson did the Tough Guy Challenge in Wolverhampton, England three times and worked as a facilitator at a ropes course while in high school, and he got the inspiration to combine those two experiences together. The result is the Cahoots Duo Challenge. The Cahoots Duo Challenge is a race series where you and a friend combine wits, strength, strategy, and stamina to negotiate a barrage of nearly two dozen unique obstacles and challenges. All Cahoots courses have been specifically and creatively designed to prove the resolve and test the limits of even the toughest of twosomes. You’ll carry, push, pull and roll one another over and through a variety of perils and hazards. You’ll swing over energy sapping bogs on the Siamese Trapeze, build precarious bridges, and scale 10′ walls. You’ll have to rely on each other, trust each other, and work together or you can’t progress through the course. Basically, it’s an obstacle course that’s specifically designed to be done as a pair.

I think it’s an awesome idea!

The first three Cahoots events are scheduled for the following times and places:

Phoenix, AZ, Saturday April 28, 2012

Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday August 11, 2012

Dallas, Texas, Saturday October 27, 2012

Cahoots is giving away two free registrations (for you and your partner) for each location. To enter to win, leave a comment telling us 1) Which race location you’ll enter if you win, and 2) The location closest to you where you’d like to see a Cahoots race come next.

Cahoots will be expanding across the country, so follow them on Facebook to get the latest event venue updates.

Atlantic Odyssey rowers rescued after capsizing

One could easily equate such an ambitious goal of sailing the Atlantic Ocean in 30-days in a row boat equivalent to running a four minute mile, but at sea.

This picture is of the crew of the Sara G rescued after 14 hours at sea after their row boat capsized.

The crew had been trying to row from Morocco to Barbados in under 30 days, and were 27 days into their journey when the 36ft (11m) vessel overturned.

The Atlantic Odyssey website says the men were picked up from a life raft by a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship.

It named the team as: Father-of-four Ian Rowe, 45, from Bedford; Aodhan Kelly, 26, from Dublin; Simon Brown, 37, a father-of-three from Wiltshire; father-of-two Yaacov Mutnikas; Mark Beaumont, 29, an adventurer from Perthshire, and skipper Matt Craughwell.
