Face to face with a Somali Pirate Interview

This video of a interview with a Somali Pirate is a rare glimpse into the world of modern day Pirate behavior in the Indian Ocean.

If sailing the high seas, Pirates are a real threat and it is seldom we hear from incarcerated Pirates and what fueled the epidemic at sea in the first place.

As reported, Somali Pirates initially were motivated to defend there fishery resources, then matters began to take on a terrorist tone for financial gain. Because local legal systems failed to prosecute these hostile acts at sea in a court of law, there remains little motivation to curve these activities in Somali.

One Somali pirate serving six years in prison told the BBC's Simon Reeve that he thought the piracy was justified even though it has become a multi-million dollar criminal industry and there have been cases of hostages and ship's crew being killed.
